Malcolm Saville

Biography

Malcolm Saville was born in Sussex in 1901. He began writing whilst living in Hertfordshire and working for George Newnes publishers whilst his family were war-time evacuees to Shropshire. His first book was sent to his children chapter by chapter and was eventually published as Mystery at Witchend and serialised by the BBC. It was the first of some twenty Lone Pine stories, and other series included those concerning the Jillion (Jillies) and Buckingham families. Unusually, almost all of his stories were set in real locations, such as Shropshire, Sussex and Dartmoor, and he encouraged his readers to go out and explore these areas. Another aspect of his work that no doubt contributed to his success was his policy of replying to all children who wrote to him – one commentator has observed that given his popularity he must have spent as much time writing letters as writing books!

Links

There are a number of excellent websites devoted to Saville and his work. Among them is The Malcolm Saville Society. A little less dry is John Allsup’s Malcolm Saville site. There is a Malcolm Saville Archive at Worcester University which is a mine of fascinating information. Another site has also an excellent bibliography with scans of lots of dustwrappers.
