Biography

Born in 1912, Monica Le Doux Newton moved to Rye in Sussex when her father became the vicar there. Her life as a child was very like Tamzin’s (heroine of the Romney Marsh books) mending nets, riding, fishing and exploring the Romney Marsh. Later these locations and people appeared in her books, along with those of the Devil’s Punchbowl in Surrey where she moved with her husband and children following the successful publication of her first book Wish for a Pony. As well as the Romney Marsh and Punchbowl Farm series, Monica wrote a number of non-fiction titles about the animals that surrounded them: The Cats of Punchbowl Farm, Badger Valley and The Unsought Farm. She also wrote two non-series novels – Killer Dog and Under the Rose. The latter is one of my personal favourites, although I will always adore Wish for a Pony which was the first ME book that I read.

The Monica Edwards website is very good, as is From the Punchbowl. A book collectors’ site in Australia also has an interesting review of her work.

If you know of any interesting links, please let us know.
