Biography

Many people are surprised to learn that the writer behind Just William, that most endearing of schoolboys, was a woman. Born in Lancashire in 1890, Richmal Crompton Lamburn was educated at London University before becoming a classics teachers at Bromley High School. During this time she wrote short stories in her spare time but it was a severe attack of polio that led to her becoming a full-time writer. She wrote almost fifty William books and by the time of her death in 1969, over 8 million copies of William books had been sold. A comprehensive bibliography, including Crompton’s lesser known adult fiction titles is available and some of her adult titles, although hard to find, are very good.
