Enid Blyton

Biography

Irrefutably the most successful children’s writer of the 20th century. Enid was born in 1897 and was brought up in Beckenham, Kent. Whilst training as a kindergarten teacher, she began submitting stories to children’s magazines, and her first book, a collection of poetry called Child Whispers, was published in 1922. She is best known for the perennially successful Famous Five, Secret Seven and Noddy series. Whilst she has been criticised for being snobbish, sexist and even racist, the truth is that children love these books and are still reading them 60 or more years after they were first published.
